QPAT to the Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs – Bill C-320

The AQPV welcomes Bill C-320, An Act to amend the Corrections and Conditional Release Act (provision of information to victims). This is a step forward that will strengthen the rights to information and protection provided by the Canadian Charter of Victims’ Rights.
This new initiative will henceforth include explanations from the authorities as to how the offender’s eligibility dates or dates for obtaining temporary absences, parole or statutory release are determined.
Karine Mac Donald, our General Manager, expressed AQPV’s positions and raised key questions, including:
🔶 How will explanations of how these dates were determined be passed on to victims?
🔶 Will they be communicated in writing only?
🔶 What measures are planned to support victims when they receive this information?
The AQPV stresses the importance of guaranteeing the effectiveness of these new measures. It is essential that this information is sufficiently clear, easy to understand and accessible to victims throughout their journey through the justice system. In addition, it is crucial to provide appropriate support to help them understand and use this information, so that they can fully exercise their rights.
