CETM brochure – Victims of crime before the Mental Disorders Review Board

When a person charged with a criminal offence is declared unfit to stand trial (UST) or not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder (NCR), victims often lack information about, for example, the Mental Disorder Review Board (MDRB), its role, how it operates and its obligations to them.

This lack of information can affect their sense of security and the exercise of their rights. Victims’ participation in CETM hearings remains marginal.

Not to mention that the victim is often close to the person declared ISP or NCR, which can make the situation all the more complex.

This brochure is intended for all victims of criminal acts committed by a person declared ISP or NCR and who come into contact with the CETM. It may also be of interest to their loved ones and to the people who work with them.

It’s a comprehensive information tool that will answer questions about the CETM, unfit-to-try and not criminally responsible by reason of mental disorder verdicts, and highlight the rights and remedies of victims.
